  1. Menstruation each cycle is made up of an average of 16 teaspoons of menstrual blood or just one third of a cup.
     
  2. When you’re in water - be that taking a bath or at the pool - period flow will lessen due to the external pressure of the water, but it won’t stop completely. 
     
  3. Menstrual blood may change color from the start to the end of your period. Colors could include brown, bright red, pink, and darker red. 
     
  4. Menstruation is different to the blood you see when you cut your finger in that it contains less blood cells. It also holds tissue, nutrients, cells, and fluid from the walls of the vagina and the lining of the uterus. There may also be blood clots, which can be more likely to happen first thing in the morning.
     
  5. Menstrual blood doesn’t contain the same coagulants as regular blood, which means it cannot harden or scab over. The body ensures it remains mostly liquid to allow it to flow out of the body.
